Best Bedding for Your Nursery
Preparing the nursery for your baby is such an exciting time. When getting your nursery ready, you want your baby to feel comfortable, but you also want the nursery to look adorable. It took me a while to figure out exactly what I needed. Let us just say that the nursery was not perfected until after our baby arrived. Unfortunately, some of it required real world experience. For instance, our baby was moving a lot, which resulted in him kicking his diaper off. This consequently led to wet mattress sheets.
We did not realize that we would need multiple bedsheet changes in one day. Although, I listened to many baby preparation podcasts, this was never mentioned. During our first week home from the hospital, we found ourselves ordering more mattress sheets. Moreover, we found ourselves struggling with finding the right size.
In this article I will share everything that is bedding related. I will discuss mattresses, crib sheets, mattress protectors, and much more. Furthermore, I will discuss some important details that you need to pay attention to, and I will share some tricks when purchasing your bedding. I will cover the bedding for the crib, bassinet, and for the play pin.
Baby Crib Bedding
Baby Crib Mattress
Finding the right mattress was a long process. We already ordered the crib, so we knew the size that we needed. I highly recommend measuring the crib before ordering a mattress and paying good attention to the measurements when ordering the mattress. We quickly realized that just because a mattress is advertised as “universal fit” that it does not necessarily mean that it would work for us.
We ended up purchasing the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Crib Mattress, which was dual sided. The five-inch dual-sided mattress supports newborns and toddlers. You will want a dual sided mattress, as you will not want to have to purchase another mattress down the line. These are the areas where you can save some money. Furthermore, the mattress was waterproof and easy to clean. However, we ended up purchasing a mattress protector just in case so that we definitely did not need to purchase another mattress. Our motto: Better safe than sorry!
Baby Crib Mattress Protector
A mattress protector is just a good investment. However, you will want to purchase two or more of these in case one is compromised and in the wash. Trust me, you will not have time to do laundry with a newborn baby every day. We purchased the American Baby Company Waterproof Fitted Crib and Toddler Mattress Protector. It was described as quilted, and noiseless, which ended up checking out.
Baby Crib Mattress Sheets
When it comes to mattress sheets, you will want to have a few replacements. We ended up purchasing four mattress sheets. Another thing that you may want to look out for is the material content. We found that material such as cotton kept our baby cool, while material like polyester caused overheating.
One brand that worked for us was Ely’s & Co because they offered 100% cotton sheets at a great price. We purchased the Ely’s & Co. 2-Pack Jersey Cotton Crib Sheets and never had regrets. They also washed really well. Another brand that we used that made 100% cotton sheets was Lambs & Ivy. We purchased the Lambs & Ivy Woodland Forest Animal 100% Cotton Baby Fitted Crib Sheet, which was an adorable print.
Baby Bassinet Bedding
Baby Bassinet Pad
The mattress pad that came with our bassinet, was very thin and uncomfortable, so we ended up purchasing another one that was a little better. The Colgate Mattress Cradle & Bassinet Mattress Pad seemed a little bit more comfortable. It is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and reversible with two-inch thickness. It was also wrapped in a waterproof quilted cover, which was a nice touch.
Baby Bassinet Pad Protector
We ended up adding a quilted pad protector, just to add a little more comfort to the mattress pad, since the pads are so thin. It took us a while to find the right one, but the one that washed well was by Ely’s & Co. We purchased the Ely’s & Co. Jersey Cotton Quilted Waterproof Hourglass Sheet, which is only available in two colors, gray and pink.
Baby Bassinet Pad Sheets
Since we had such a great experience with our crib sheets that were by Ely’s & Co, we of course stuck with purchasing the bassinet pad sheets by Ely’s & Co as well. There were a few prints available, which was nice. For our bassinet we purchased the Ely’s & Co Bassinet Sheet 2-Pack. I love that this company sells the 2-pack at such a great price. These bassinet sheets are also made with 100% jersey cotton.
Playpen Bedding
Baby Playpen Mattress
We used the Graco Pack and Play On the Go Playard for our baby, however the pad that came with it was useless. Luckily, we came across a great playpen mattress pad by hiccapop. It was the hiccapop Pack N Play Mattress Topper with travel carry bag and washable cover.
Baby Playpen Mattress Protector
Since our baby spent a lot of time in the playpen, and since we believe in protecting our investments, we of course invested in an additional quilted cover by Ely’s & Co. We found the Ely’s & Co. Waterproof Cotton Quilted Pack n Play mini crib sheet to be a perfect fit. It also added a little extra coziness for our little one.
Baby Playpen Mattress Sheets
Of course, we also stuck with the cotton playpen mattress sheets by Ely’s & Co. We washed these twice a week and the material has to yet deteriorate. The cotton is so soft, and it washes so well. I do hope that this brand sticks around for a while.
Conclusion
I hope that my recommendations on bedding for your nursery are helpful. I found that purchasing more than one sheet or more than one mattress protector was a huge time saver for us. It was nice not having to do laundry every day. Also, I found it very essential to measure our crib, bassinet, and playpen before making my purchases. It prevents the return headaches that no one with a newborn has time for.
